Challah (english)

Materials:
Sock Yarn 4ply (I used Drachenwolle 'Schneeflocke' in Karamel)
Double Point Needles US1

abbreviations:
k = knit
p = purl

ribbing: k2, p2

30 sts/46 rows = 10 cm

Right sock

Cast on 64 sts, join to the round and knit 8 rounds

Needle 1 = 32 sts
Needle 2 = 16 sts
Needle 3 = 16 sts

Leg:

p2, 18 sts in pattern, p2, continue in ribbing to end of round.

Knit pattern 1 ½ times (or to desired length).


Heel flap:

is worked over the 32 sts of needle 2 & 3:
Right side (row 1): slip 1, knit 1, repeat to end.
Wrong side (row 2): slip 1, purl to end

Repeat this 2 rows 14 more times (30 rows)


Turn heel:

Row 1: Slip 1, k 16, ssk, k 1, turn.
Row 2: Slip 1, p 5, p2tog, p1, turn.
Row 3: Slip 1, k to slipped st, ssk, k 1, turn.
Row 4: Slip 1, p to slipped stitch, p2tog, p1, turn.
Repeat rows 3 & 4 until 16 worked sts and 6 sts from the heel flap (3 before, 3 behind the worked sts) are on the needle.


Complete heel:

Slip 1, knit to last stitch, ssk, turn.
Slip 1, purl to last stitch, p2tog, turn.
Repeat this 2 rows two times more - 16 sts on the needle.


Gusset:

Pick up and knit 16 stitches on every side of the heel flap.
Divide the sts between 3 Needles:

Needle 1 - 8 heel sts, 16 gusset sts (24 sts)
Needle 2 - 32 instep sts
Needle 3 - 16 gusset sts, 8 heel sts (24 sts)

Knit the instep in pattern, sole in stockinette.
Knit gusset stitches tbl in the next round.
Knit instep in pattern.

Next Round:
Needle 1 - k to three sts before end, ssk, k1
Needle 3 - work in pattern
Needle 3 - k1, k2tog, k to end
Repeat these 2 rounds until 16 sts remain on needles 1 & 3


Foot:

Cont in patt as set, working sts on needle 1 and needle 3 in stockinette st and sts on needle 2 in pattern until work measures 2 inches less than desired length.


Toe:

Round 1:
K to last 3 sts on needle 1, k2tog, k1
k1, ssk, k to last 3 sts on needle 2, k2tog, k1
k1, ssk, k to end of needle 3

Round 2:
K all sts.
Repeat these 2 rounds until 32 stitches remain.

K sts from Needle 1 onto Needle 3 (16 sts).
Graft sts on Needle 2 to sts on Needle 3.


Left sock

is knitted as right sock, but mirror the pattern:

Cast on 64 sts, join to the round and knit 8 rounds

Needle 1 = 32 sts
Needle 2 = 16 sts
Needle 3 = 16 sts

Leg
*k2, p2* three times (12 sts), 18 sts in pattern, p2, continue in ribbing to end of round.
